Although the “Control of Hazardous Energy: Lockout/Tagout” OSHA regulation is found in the General Industry standard set (1910.147), there may be instances in which Lockout/Tagout procedures are required either by a construction company performing work on vehicles or other equipment on a site or on their own premises or when working on electrical equipment or circuits (1926.417).
Based upon your assigned readings for this module and after conducting any supporting research you feel necessary to support your responses, answer the following questions in the form of a discussion post to this forum:
What are the advantages of having a Control of Hazardous Energy program/policy for a construction site or construction company, even though the construction standards do not specifically require it?
What types of electrical safety training should be required for contractors and subcontractors on a construction site?
What are some of the hazards that might be avoided if a Control of Hazardous Energy program/policy is in place for a construction site or construction company? Give at least two examples – be specific.
The General Industry standard has always included a confined space regulation and – recognizing that the construction standard set lacked depth and clarity on the handling of this issue (confined space) – in 2015, the construction confined space standard was set into regulation. Do you think that a version of the Control of Hazardous Energy/Lockout-Tagout” should be included in the construction standard set – why or why not?
What sources of energy do lockout/tagout requirements apply to?
What is a GCFI and how does it work?
Discuss the dangers of lack of ground fault protection on flexible cords and power tools.
